Three questions sort out most dryer faults. Does the drum turn? Does it get warm? And does the cycle end with dry clothes or damp ones? Answering those puts the problem in one of three areas: the belt and motor, the heater and airflow path, or the sensing that decides when to stop. The type of dryer then narrows it further, because vented, condenser and heat pump machines fail in quite different ways.

    Filters, ducting and the condenser are examined first, because restricted airflow causes most no-heat faults by tripping the thermal cut-out. Heater and thermostat readings are taken with a meter rather than assumed.

    Belt, pulley, drum rollers and rear bearing are checked by hand and by ear. Worn felt seals and scored rollers show up as scuffing on clothing long before the drum seizes.

Why airflow explains most dryer faults, and where heat pump models differ

Almost every no-heat fault begins as an airflow problem. Lint passes the filter, settles in the ducting or across the condenser fins, and the heater then runs hotter than designed. A cycling thermostat opens and closes to control that, but once the restriction is bad enough a one-shot thermal cut-out blows permanently. Fitting a new cut-out without clearing the restriction simply blows the next one, which is why a competent engineer checks airflow and cleans the whole path before replacing anything.

Damp clothes at the end of a programme are usually a sensing issue rather than a heating one. Automatic cycles read conductivity across two metal bars inside the drum, and a film of fabric softener or detergent residue on those bars makes the machine read the load as already dry. Wiping them with a little white vinegar on a cloth is a genuine fix.

Heat pump machines behave differently. They dry at lower temperatures through a sealed refrigerant circuit, so cycles are long by design, but a clogged fine mesh evaporator filter makes them longer still. Fans, sensors and drain pumps on these models are repairable in the normal way. A failed compressor or a loss of refrigerant is not sensibly repairable in the home, and that is the point where replacing the machine becomes the reasonable answer.

Clean the lint filter after every load; that habit alone prevents most heat faults. Do not run a dryer overnight or with the house empty, and never plug one into an extension lead or multi-way adapter. Unplug at the socket before removing a panel. Why is my dryer taking two or three cycles to dry a load?

Restricted airflow, almost always. On a vented machine check the hose for kinks and lint; on a condenser, pull the condenser block out and rinse it; on a heat pump, clean the fine filter behind the lint trap. If the machine has been cleaned properly and the times are still long, the heater or a temperature sensor is the next thing to test.

What affects the cost of a tumble dryer repair?

The part and how deep it sits. A belt or a thermostat on an accessible model is quick work. A drum bearing or a rear seal means stripping the machine down. Heat pump components generally cost more than the equivalent part on a vented dryer. Spares availability on older models matters too. The engineer quotes clearly once the fault is confirmed, and nothing proceeds without your agreement.

Can a vented dryer be used in a room without an outside wall?

Not well. Venting into the room itself puts several litres of water vapour into the air over a cycle, which is how condensation and mould start in a small utility cupboard. If ducting to outside is not possible, a condenser or heat pump machine is the sensible swap. Where a duct does exist, keep the run short, with as few bends as the layout allows.

Do you work on stacked and integrated dryers?

Yes. Stacked installations are unbolted and lowered safely before any work starts, and integrated units come out of the housing first, which adds time to the visit. Both are worth mentioning when you book so the engineer allows for it. Access in older conversions can be tight, so let us know if the machine sits in a cupboard or under a fitted worktop.
