How the job runs

The order the work happens in

  • Call and triage

    We ask what you can see and smell, and what has already tripped. Where there is immediate risk, you get instructions for isolating at the main switch before anyone sets off.

  • Attend and isolate

    The affected circuit is isolated, locked off and proved dead using a voltage indicator checked against a proving unit. Nothing else happens until that step has been completed properly.

  • Diagnose

    Circuits are split and tested one at a time to separate an appliance fault from a wiring fault. That is usually the point at which a tripping RCD is finally pinned down.

  • Repair or make safe

    Where parts are on the van, the repair is finished and the circuit retested before handover. Otherwise the installation is left in a safe state and a return visit booked.

Safe isolation, and the real reasons an RCD keeps tripping

Safe isolation comes first on every urgent call, and it follows a fixed sequence: identify the circuit, isolate it, secure the isolation with a lock and a warning label, then prove the conductors dead with an approved voltage indicator that has been checked on a proving unit both before and after the test. Skipping the proving step is how people get hurt by a tester that has failed silently.

Tripping is the most common reason we are called out. An RCD compares the current flowing out on the line conductor with the current returning on the neutral and disconnects when the difference reaches its rating, commonly 30mA on domestic circuits. The device is doing its job. The question is what is leaking.

Three causes account for most of it. One faulty appliance, found by unplugging everything, resetting, then reintroducing items singly. Water in an outdoor socket, garden lighting or a flooded floor void. Or cumulative leakage, where several appliances each leak a little and the total crosses the threshold, which is why a board protected by one shared RCD trips far more often than a board using individual RCBOs.

Smoke, burning, sparking, water on live equipment, exposed conductors or a circuit that will not stay on all need attendance rather than a morning appointment.

Switch off at the main switch if you can reach it safely, unplug what you can, and keep everyone clear of anything wet or scorched. Never open the consumer unit, tape a breaker in, or fit a larger fuse to stop something tripping. Fault-finding on fixed wiring needs proper test equipment and a qualified electrician working to BS 7671.

Is a power cut something you can fix?

If neighbours have power and you do not, the fault sits inside your own installation, most often a main switch, a service fuse or a failed residual current device, and that is work for an emergency electrician.

My RCD keeps tripping. What can I try before calling?

Unplug everything on the affected circuits, including anything in the loft and the garden, then reset. If it holds, plug items back one at a time and wait a few minutes between each. Fridges, immersion heaters, kettles and outdoor lighting are frequent culprits. If it will not reset with everything unplugged, stop there, leave the board alone and ring us.

How quickly can somebody attend?
